Usability vs. Losability

Filed under: Marketing & Strategy, Usability — Chris Peters, August 2, 2005

G. A. Buchholz writes a great article that reminds us that usability is a tactic, not a strategy. While quite a few of us put great user experience at the top of our priority lists, we sometimes forget that it alone will not put food on the table for our organizations.

Many webmasters are in the same position I am in. (Yes, webmasters still exist, even if we are past the 90s.) We must balance an unhealthy thirst for technical knowledge with the need for creating a business-backed strategy. We must embrace great practices in the use and construction of technology and in producing great user experiences, but without a strategic vision backed by analysis of true business needs, we’re merely spinning our wheels.
