Actually using the power of CSS
One of my clients recently voiced a concern over the colors on her site. She felt that they were a little “off-brand” from the direction her print materials were going.
Thanks to CSS, I was able to sit down with her for no longer than a half hour with Fireworks and Dreamweaver open. We picked out new colors in Fireworks and were able to rapidly change colors on the site just by changing values in the stylesheet. During this short period of time, we were even able to try different scenarios for different elements on the page. It wasn’t a heavy, kludgy experience like most technologists want to make it out to be.
Most of the time, I think CSS is a “set it and forget it” affair. Web designers set up this very powerful tool but never touch it after the initial design is released. Maybe I’m just spoiled to have a client that is willing to roll up her sleeves and tweak things. I was so excited that I didn’t even charge her for the half hour!
To all of you web site owners out there: if your web designer can’t sit down with you for a half hour and change the colors on your site, then your web designer is doing something very wrong!
